Reclining wheelchairs are very uncommon these days as tilting wheelchairs have much more pros and less cons. Recliners are very heavy and while some will fold, it's not an easy process. They were used primarily in institutions because of their large size for people who would benefit from laying back in their chair. Unfortunately when reclined the back will slide on the upholstery making any kind of moulded back or lateral supports unusable.

Frame - Because of the stresses on the frames of reclining wheelchairs they must be very strong and consequently are very heavy. Most recliners are made from steel but there are a few models made of aluminum. There is usually some way to fold them for transport but they are still very large.

Upholstery - The upholstery will probably be vinyl and although there may be some choice of colour most dealers will usually only stock one or two colours which means your wheelchair will have to be ordered if they don't have your colour.

Armrests - The armrests available are fixed or adjustable height, full length or desk length, flip back or removable. Adjustable height full length are the most commonly chosen arms as armrest height is important for comfort.

Footrests - Both regular footrests and elevating legrests are available with this style of wheelchair however sitting in a reclined wheelchair without elevating one's feet is very uncomfortable and can lead to skin breakdown. Hence, elevating legrests are the most common choice of front rigging.

Wheels & Casters - The options for wheel size and type are quite good on this style of chair. The rear wheels most commonly ordered in 22" and 24" but 20" and 26" are often available. The front casters are available in 6" or 8" diameters. Both rear wheels and caster are available with air or solid tires however casters almost always work better when they are solid.
